Stargate Universe arrived in 2009 with two seasons and one impossible mission: to take the franchise somewhere darker. It did. A B-team steps through the gate and ends up stranded on an Ancient ship, hundreds of thousands of light years from Earth, with no way back and no idea what the ship wants.
The tone is the opposite of the classic series: austere, mature, full of people with unfinished pasts. If you liked the mood of Battlestar Galactica, you will recognise the intent here: less adventure, more survival, more politics among people who are not ready for each other.
The series that could not be
It was cancelled before it could become what it was heading towards, and that is the whole review. SGU is the story of a group of people who are not heroes, trapped in a place that does not care, and it ends in the middle. Some of us are still annoyed about it.
A B-team, an empty ship and too much silence
The ship is the real antagonist: enormous, ancient, and completely empty of answers. The series understands that being far from home is not an adventure, it is a slow psychological pressure, and it plays that card every week.
If you liked the first season of Battlestar Galactica, this is the closest thing the Stargate franchise ever got to that tone. It ends too soon, and it still works.
